The next day I went to a factory that my mother told me about for a job. She use to work there and thought I could get on easily. She was right I was hired right away. Now this wasn’t quite what I had in mind when I left the Marines. Especially working in a factory just like my folks had done all of their lives. I had just wanted to collect unemployment for a while, let my hair grow long, maybe go back to school on the GI Bill. However I wanted a nice car and maybe get a place to live on my own. So this factory would have to do.
Starting at the factory was going to lead me to a new adventure. I was going to meet many new people and make new friends. The factory had more women working there then men. I knew that I had to make as many new aquaintences as I could. No not because I was single and a young man, but because I had a vision. My vision was that I was going to sell every person in that factory some AmWay. Amway made a lot of household cleaning supplies. The best thing that I could start selling these peopls on was the laundry detergent. It was the best product out there. You see most of the commerical products out there had removed ‘Phosphates’. Phosphates was an additive to help get you laundry cleaner. AmWay’s detergent was going to be an easy sell. They also made some great car cleaning items too. I had a plan that after a few weeks of working in the factory I would start to tell everyone about AmWay and their great products.
I started selling the laundry detergent and other household cleaning items to the women and selling the car cleaning items to the men. The women were the majority of the employees that worked there, so as a result I was selling a lot of laundry detergent. Sales were good.
It was only a couple of months of working and selling, that I was able to buy me a nice car. Did you notice that I separated work and selling? I did so because in my mind selling is not a job it is fun and challenging. Work is something that has to be done and selling is something that you enjoy doing. I suppose a person can enjoy working at a job, but for me I have always enjoyed selling.
I have heard that prositution is the oldest profession, however I believe that sales is. After all the serphant in the Garden Of Eden sold Eve on the idea of eating from the forbidden fruit. And the she then sold Adam on eating it too. Zig Ziglar said that no jobs would be if it were not for a salesman, even Thomas Eddison went before congress with the light bulb many times before he was able to talk them into approving it. Heck we all could still be in the dark if it wasn’t for Eddison selling the idea. No factories, no industry would be in business if it were not for a salesman selling the product. I am proud to be called a salesman!
